Ranking the 20 Large-Cap Mutual Funds and ETFs with the Worst One-Year Returns

Attorney Advising Disclaimer

Citing market turbulence, Financial Planning identified vulnerability in once-reliable large-cap funds and compiled a list of the 20 worst-performing large-cap mutual funds and ETFs, including leveraged, inverse, and institutional funds, over the past year.

The article states that some funds that previously experienced strong double-digit annualized returns have faltered and reported losses. Combine that with high fees associated with some ETF and mutual fund products and the underperformance's damaging effect is felt more strongly.

Some of these funds, such as Fairholme Fund (FAIRX) and CGM Focus Fund (CGMFX), we saw coming in our July 2018 "Financial, Energy Sectors Feature in 10 Funds with Largest Losses in First Half of 2018" posting, while others are relative newcomers. Fairholme (FAIRX) also appeared on the November list of the 20 worst performing mutual funds, while the SA US Value Select fund (SAVLX) only began trading in 2017, leaving it little time to perform before its December 2018 nosedive.

Two on the list—Oakmark Select Investor (OAKLX) and the aforementioned CGM Focus Fund (CGMFX)—experienced double-digit losses. Oakmark's OAKLX lost 14.90% and CGM's CGMFX lost 27.77%.
